Ørsted Has 6.7 GW of Offshore Wind Under Construction

Ørsted has 6.7 GW of offshore wind under construction in 2024 across several projects worldwide, more than ever before in the company’s history, according to a recent newsletter from the global offshore wind developer.

The capacity the company has under construction this year is significantly contributed by the Hornsea 3 offshore wind farm in the UK, after Ørsted made the final investment decision on the project in December 2023.

With 231 wind turbines and a generation capacity of 2,852 MW, Hornsea Three, expected to be completed by the end of 2027, is the world’s single largest offshore wind farm under construction, according to the developer.

In Germany, Ørsted is building Borkum Riffgrund 3. With an installed capacity of 913 MW, Borkum Riffgrund 3 will be the largest offshore wind farm in Germany once operational in 2025.

The adjacent 253 MW Gode Wind 3 is also under construction with all monopiles now installed.

In Taiwan, the installation of all 111 wind turbines at Ørsted’s 900 MW Greater Changhua 1 and 2a offshore wind farms has just been completed, with commissioning work underway, while the next two phases, the 920 MW Greater Changhua 2b and 4 offshore wind farms, are in the construction phase.

Commissioning work is also underway at the 132 MW South Fork Wind project in the US, after the final wind turbine was installed this month. South Fork Wind is the first offshore wind farm feeding electricity into the New York grid.
