Norwegian Floating Offshore Wind Project Gets Eur 175 Million Boost

12 Mar 2024  by offshorewind
Odfjell Oceanwind, Source Galileo, and Kansai Electric Power Company have received NOK 2 billion (approximately EUR 175 million) in state funding from Norwegian government agency Enova for its GoliatVIND floating offshore wind project.

Located approximately 95 kilometres from Hammerfest at a depth of 300-400 metres, the GoliatVIND floating offshore wind project could add 320 GWh of renewable energy to the Hammerfest region.

The 75 MW demonstration project is planned to feature Odfjell Oceanwind’s Deepsea Star foundations and five 15 MW wind turbines. The wind turbine tower will have a height of 135-170 metres while the rotor diameter will be between 220 and 260 metres.

The offshore wind farm will be connected to the Goliat platform, utilising the existing power cable to shore. According to our previous news, the project is planned to be put into operation in 2027.

A total of seven companies submitted project proposals that were assessed by the Norwegian government enterprise Enova with GoliatVIND receiving NOK 2 billion in support.

“The project proposals submitted were of a very high level, which bodes well for future calls for proposals. Floating offshore wind technology represents an exciting opportunity to take us further steps towards a low-emission society,” said Nils Kristian Nakstad, CEO of Enova.

The bidders in the competition had to commit to a submitted progress plan that requires the project to be commissioned within five years, and Enova must be kept informed of the project’s progress and reporting for payment of support, said Enova.

“This grant is a breakthrough for Odfjell Oceanwind and our technologies and is an important step towards us demonstrating the Deepsea Star(TM) with 15 MW turbines. The award is a result of a great team effort from all three partners in the consortium. It also demonstrates the Government’s continued commitment to let Norwegian companies lead the way in the global floating offshore wind market,” said Per Lund, CEO of Odfjell Oceanwind.

According to the Norwegian government agency, there will be another application round for floating offshore wind in the fall. Astrid Lilliestråle, director of technology and market development at Enova, said that they are planning a new call for proposals with a deadline of 15 September.
