The Israel Electricity Authority reported that the country installed 1,108 MW of new solar PV capacity in 2023. Renewables covered 12.5% of Israel’s electricity demand in 2023.
According to data from the Israel Electricity Authority, by the end of 2023 the country had installed 5,903 MW of renewable energy capacity, compared to 4,795 MW installed at the end of the previous year. These figures do not include data for the Palestinian territories from 2021 to 2023.
Eitan Parnass, founder and director of the Israel Green Energy Association, stated that the new capacity added in 2023 consists of solar energy, including commercial-scale photovoltaic plants awarded through tenders and small systems supported by feed-in tariffs.
Likewise, more than 90% of the 6 GW of renewable energy currently installed in Israel are photovoltaic systems. Israel’s wind energy resources are less powerful, so there are fewer wind energy installations.
The Electricity Authority has also noted that the increase in electricity demand in Israel is higher than in other Western countries for reasons such as population growth and relatively high economic growth.
Renewables covered 12.5% of Israel’s electricity demand last year, up from 10.1% in 2022. Given the constant increase in the country’s annual electricity demand and in order to maintain these rates, Israel needs to continue adding significant amounts of green energy, the Electricity Authority said.
Israel aims to generate 30% of its electricity from renewable energy by 2030.
