Battery energy storage developer Atlantic Green has successfully energised its first project, a 30MW/61.8MWh battery asset in Buxton.
According to the company, the battery energy storage system (BESS) achieved energisation on 11 April.
The company has two other BESS projects in development, including Project Cellarhead (300MW/600MWh), expected to be energised in Q2 2026, and Project T (130MW/270MWh), expected to be energised in Q4 2028.
Atlantic Green is a joint venture between Interland and Nofar Energy. The organisation focuses on investing, developing, and operating grid-scale BESS projects in the UK.
UK BESS pipeline continues to grow
In the past couple of weeks, Solar Power Portal has reported on several BESS developments taking place across both the UK and Ireland.
On Monday (15 April), SSE Renewables launched its first operative BESS system with a capacity of 50MW/100MWh. The final energisation tests for the 2-hour duration BESS, located at Salisbury, Wiltshire, were completed last week, and the asset is now trading in Great Britain’s wholesale energy market.
In the Republic of Ireland, ESB, an Irish state-owned utility company, was granted planning consent to develop a wind-plus-battery energy storage project in Scotland on 12 April. The project will combine around 96MW of wind power with a 20MW BESS, the storage capacity of which has not been disclosed in megawatt-hours (MWh).
Just a day before this was announced, battery storage asset owner and operator Varco Energy added a 47.5MW BESS in Cornwall to its portfolio. Planning consent for the BESS was secured in October 2022, and Varco will now look to bring the asset online by Q2 2025.
Once complete, the company stated that the BESS will provide further flexibility solutions for the UK’s electricity system, providing an opportunity to drive renewable developments further.
