Vestas has completed the installation of its V236-15.0 MW offshore wind turbine in the Port of Thyborøn in Denmark, only three months after the port ordered the company’s flagship model.
On 8 June, the wind turbine produced its first kWh of power, a crucial step in the final verification campaign, Vestas said in a social media post (open to watch Vestas’s video).
Located in the northwestern part of Denmark, near the Nissum Bredning offshore wind site, the Port of Thyborøn placed a firm order Vestas for the 15 MW wind turbine in March this year.
The order covers the supply, delivery, and commissioning of the wind turbine, and also includes a 20-year AOM4000 service agreement as well as an agreement for Vestas to do test and verification activities on the turbine.
In March, Jens Jørgen Birch, spokesperson for Thyborøn-Harboøre Vindmøllelaug I/S af 2002, which ordered the turbine, said the site offered great wind conditions for optimal energy production.
“Nearly 2,800 local shareholders have financed the turbine, and we look forward to showcase it to locals and tourists as we expect it to become an attraction,” Birch said.
Vestas installed the prototype at the Østerild National Test Centre for large wind turbines in Western Jutland, Denmark in December 2022.
In August 2023, the prototype set a world record for the most power output by a single wind turbine in 24 hours, producing 363 MWh in that period. At the end of last year, Vestas received a type certificate for its 15 MW wind turbine.
Vestas has already received orders for the V236-15.0 MW wind turbine for offshore projects in Germany, Poland, and the Netherlands, among others, and will start installing the first 15 MW turbines offshore in 2025.
“We are ramping up serial production before starting the installation of the first offshore projects featuring the V236-15.0 MW turbine,” the company said in the social media post announcing the completion of the installation of the wind turbine at the Port of Thyborøn.
