Zorlu Jeotermal Enerji Elektrik Üretimi A.S. is planning to drill two exploratory geothermal boreholes, ZDM-20 and ZDM-21, in the Diyadin district of Agri, Türkiye as part of an investment called “Geothermal Resource Exploration Project in Geothermal Resource Exploration License No. 36.”

The drilling operations will be targeting a depth of 750 meters. Drilling is expected to start within the year and to be completed by 2025. The ZDM-21 well will be located in Yolcupinar Village while the ZDM-20 well will be in the Gedik Village. The project cost is estimated at 8,300,000 TL.

The ‘Environmental Impact Assessment Not Required’ decision for the project had previously been announced by the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate. Four other wells had previously been drilled in the field.

If a geothermal resource with high temperatures is found after the drilling works, it is aimed to be used for energy production. With the completion of well testing, different alternative uses can be evaluated in the future.

The project is expected to contribute to the discovery of new geothermal resources in the region, increase the potential for thermal tourism, increase employment, and develop the local economy. To minimize environmental impacts, some measures such as dust and noise precautions, wastewater treatment, etc. have been committed in the project introduction file.

The General Directorate of Mineral Research and Exploration (MTA) of Türkiye had also previously announced plans for exploration drilling in the Diyadin district in Agri, albeit for a different license area.
