June 17 (SeeNews) - Bulgaria's Kozloduy nuclear power plant (NPP) said that it shut down its 1,000-MW Unit 6 on June 15 for planned preventive maintenance.
The shutdown was needed due to malfunctions of the transformer's oil system in the non-nuclear part of the unit, along with indications of a coolant leak in one of the steam generators, the power plant operator said in a statement on Friday.
There is no change in radiation levels on the Kozloduy NPP site, the power plant operator said.
The shutdown decision was made as a precautionary measure to ensure high safety standards and reliable electricity supply. It was coordinated with the Electricity System Operator (ESO), taking into account the load on the national energy system and the availability of sufficient generating capacity in the country.
"What we currently expect is that the repair will last until the end of June, but if there is a need, we will extend it," caretaker energy minister Vladimir Malinov said in an interview with private broadcaster bTV.
Last week, Kozloduy NPP's Unit 5 was reconnected to the grid after completing its planned annual maintenance and is now operating at full capacity, following production schedule.
