Spanish utility Naturgy Energy Group SA (BME:NTGY) on Monday inaugurated five solar farms in the Canary Islands, bringing a total of 19.5 MW to its operational renewables portfolio in the archipelago.

The new plants -- Gran Canaria I and II, and Telde I, IV and V -- are all located in the municipality of Aguimes on the island of Gran Canaria. Naturgy expects them to be able to produce 38 GWh of electricity per year, or enough to power some 11,650 homes.

The five projects represented an investment of EUR 20 million (USD 21.5m). With them, Naturgy’s renewables capacity on the Canary Islands rose to 136 MW, consisting of 12 wind and nine solar farms.

Naturgy also has a portfolio of projects under development with a capacity of close to 70 MW, including a hybridisation project using 12.9 MWh of battery storage in Aguimes.

The utility plans to close the current year with 145 MW of renewables in operation in the Canary Islands.
