BESS units are being shipped to Cero Generation’s Larks Green solar and storage project, the first to be connected at the transmission level, the firm said.

The project in South Gloucestershire has a 120MW grid connection and a 50MW battery energy storage system (BESS) array is being added to 50MW of solar PV which has been operational since May last year.

Construction is underway on the BESS and it will make the project the first solar and storage to be connected at the transmission level, developer and independent power producer (IPP) Cero’s commercial manager Patrick O’Connor told our sister site Energy-Storage.news.

The BESS has previously been slated to come online by the end of 2024. PV module and BESS firm Canadian Solar is providing engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) services while utility EDF is doing route-to-market and optimisation.

Cero’s next solar and storage project in the UK will have a 57MW BESS and 50MW of solar, but will only have a 57MW grid connection, entailing different commercial considerations since both assets will not be able to discharge at full power simultaneously.
