Korea Eyes Further Nuclear Reactor Deals in Netherlands, Poland

Korea aims to secure further multibillion dollar nuclear reactor deals in the Netherlands, Poland, Finland and Sweden after being selected as the preferred bidder to build two nuclear power plants in the Czech Republic.

Industry Minister Ahn Duk-geun and Whang Joo-ho, president of Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP), detailed the government’s plans regarding the Czech contract and other possible deals on Thursday, a day after the announcement of the preferred bidder for the two Czech reactors.

“We are carrying out a feasibility study [for the construction of nuclear reactors in the Netherlands] requested by the Dutch government,” Whang said, adding that discussions are also ongoing with the Polish government about a feasibility study.

Whang also said that KHNP is intended to participate in the nuclear reactor bidding in Finland and Sweden.

In morning trading, stocks of participants in the Czech project worth 24 trillion won ($17 billion) soared. Kepco Engineering & Construction rose 10.7 percent as of 11:09 a.m., while Doosan Enerbility gained 2.35 percent. Daewoo E&C advanced 3.35 percent.
