Construction Starts on Dutch BESS Scheme

Construction has begun on a battery energy storage system (BESS) project in the Netherlands.

A groundbreaking ceremony for the Zeewolde BESS was attended by director of Wind Farm Zeewolde Sjoerd Sieburgh Sjoerdsma, Jan Veenink and Co'nn Rennen (board of Wind Farm Zeewolde), together with alderman of the municipality of Zeewolde Steven Scheffer and deputy of the Province of Flevoland Harold Hofstra.

Battery Park Zeewolde will be located next to the transformer station of Windpark Zeewolde on the Vogelweg.

The battery park to be built covers 2000 square metres with a capacity of 65 megawatt hours.

Sjoerdsma said: “Battery Park Zeewolde will soon be one of the larger battery projects in the Netherlands.

“The energy that we will store here annually is equal to the average electricity consumption of approximately 12,000 households.

“We are very happy with the collaboration in the run-up to the construction of this mega battery, both with the municipality of Zeewolde and the Province of Flevoland.

“We all see the need for the energy transition, but also the challenges. For example, how do we provide green energy when the wind is not blowing and the sun is not shining?

“With Battery Park Zeewolde we contribute to the solutions.

“We do this by storing the energy, when necessary, in this mega battery park.”

Residents from the village of Zeewolde have been able to participate in the community project through the energy cooperative De Nieuwe Molenaars.

Rolls-Royce Power Systems is delivering the BESS and supplying the 16 battery containers.

After construction, a hedge will be planted around the substation and the battery park, so that the battery park can no longer be seen from the street.

Battery Park Zeewolde is expected to be ready for use in the fall of 2025.
