Eco Wave Power Global AB, a company specializing in onshore wave energy technology, has officially started its first megawatt-scale wave energy project in Porto, Portugal. This project is part of a broader 20MW Concession Agreement with APDL (Administração dos Portos do Douro, Leixões e Viana do Castelo, S.A.), and will include a unique underwater wave energy museum.
The project kickoff was marked by a meeting between Eco Wave Power’s CEO, Inna Braverman, and the company’s engineering team with APDL and other stakeholders. Following the meeting, the engineering team visited the breakwater site and the area underneath it, known as “The Gallery,” where the energy conversion equipment will be installed. This site will later be opened to the public as an educational wave energy museum.
Braverman expressed optimism about the project, stating: “We believe that this will be the first wave energy project in the world to show significant energy production from the power of the waves. I truly believe that this revolutionary project will position Eco Wave Power as a leading wave energy developer and serve as a significant milestone towards the commercialization of our wave energy technology globally.” She also thanked the Municipality of Porto and APDL for their support, highlighting the project’s potential to reduce the port’s carbon footprint and create new jobs.
The project aligns with Portugal’s renewable energy goals, which include generating 85% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030. The first phase of this project follows the approval received in March 2024 from APDL for construction, backed by a performance bond issued by Eco Wave Power to ensure the project’s completion within two years.
Eco Wave Power has been working closely with Portuguese law firm PLMJ, led by partner Joana Brandão, who has been advising the company on regulatory matters since 2020.
