The first of four steam generators has been installed at unit 8 of China’s Tianwan NPP in Jiangsu province, according to China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) subsidiary China Nuclear Power Engineering Co (CNPEC). The 330-tonne steam generator is is more than 14 metres long with a maximum diameter of 4.5 metres. The steam generators for Tianwan 8 were produced at Rosatom’s Atommash production site in Volgodonsk in southern Russia and travelled thousands of miles – including two months at sea – to the construction site.
The Tianwan nuclear power plant is owned and operated by Jiangsu Nuclear Power Company, a joint venture between China National Nuclear Corporation (50%), China Power Investment Corporation (30%) and Jiangsu Guoxin Group (20%). In June 2018, Russia and China signed four agreements, including for the construction of two VVER-1200 reactors at units 7 and 8 of the Tianwan plant. They are scheduled to be commissioned in 2026-2027.
The agreement for construction of Tianwan 7&8 was signed by Russia and China in 2018 and commissioning is scheduled for 2026-2027. Construction of units 7&8, equipped with VVER-1200 reactors began in May 2021. Units 1-4, with VVER-1000 reactors commissioned between 2007 to 2018 are already in operation. Units 5&6 with Chinese ACPR-1000s were commissioned in 2020 and 2021.
