Geothermal drilling in Gniezno started in November 2023 following the selection of the city as one of the recipients of funding from the National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management under the “Providing access to thermal waters in Poland” program. Drilling was fully financed by the program with an investment worth almost PLN 16 million (approx. USD 4.164 million).
Mayor of the City of Gniezno Michal Powalowski stated that tests will still be done to measure the temperature and chemical composition of the thermal fluids to determine the exact parameters of the system. The borehole had been widened to 311 mm diameter to increase fluid flow.
Minister of Climate and Environmental Protection Paulina Hennig-Kloska added that the discovery of geothermal resources in Gniezno can create many opportunities for heating and tourism. She further stated that the Ministry will extend further support for such initiatives, emphasizing that geothermal is an important part in the Ministry’s policy.
