‘E-Ship 1’, a Wind-Powered Ship, Calls at Algeciras

The E-Ship 1 ship, belonging to the German company Enercon, dedicated to the manufacture and distribution of wind turbines and a leader in wind energy, has called at the Port of Algeciras this Sunday.

The ship measures 134 metres long and 22.5 metres wide and has a capacity to move 12,800 tonnes and a crew of up to 15 people. It also has a propulsion system that is composed of a wind part, made up of four Flettner cylindrical rotors, 25 metres high by four metres in diameter.

This system, invented in the 1920s, allows the consumption of fossil fuels to be reduced by up to 30%, reducing CO2 emissions and contributing to environmental sustainability. However, Flettner rotors could not compete with the low price of fossil fuels at that time and the project was abandoned until it was revived with the E-Ship1, which left the port of Bremen (Germany) on August 19 and is now anchored in Algeciras.
