COP29 CEO on Integrating Green Hydrogen Into Azerbaijan’s Energy Strategy (Exclusive)

The issue of green hydrogen was a key topic of discussion regarding the Azerbaijan-EU green energy corridor, Elnur Soltanov, Deputy Minister of Energy, COP29 CEO, told Trend.

"We asked our consultants to examine the potential of green hydrogen. By converting green electricity into green hydrogen, we can export energy as molecules instead of electrons, depending on feasibility," he said.

The Presidential Action Agenda includes green hydrogen as a crucial element, highlighting its global novelty. "We don't have functioning markets, agreed-upon certification measures, or infrastructure for transport yet," the CEO noted. "Economically viable and scaled-up infrastructure is still lacking."

He pointed out the existence of promising pilot projects worldwide and praised Azerbaijan's active role. "Azerbaijan is conducting numerous feasibility studies. The initial feasibility study by EBRD indicated that green hydrogen produced in Azerbaijan could be competitive in European markets. This inspires us to continue on this path".

Soltanov reiterated the significance of green hydrogen in Azerbaijan’s action agenda. "We will address related issues and expedite the process. Additionally, we aim to showcase Azerbaijan's efforts and plans in this field".

The COP29 CEO underscored the essential role of green hydrogen and other green gases in the global energy transition.

"The importance of green hydrogen, or green gases, stems from this fact: Electricity cannot replace all energy needs that we have," he stated. "There are certain sectors of the economy, especially in industry, where we lack the technology to supply energy through electricity".

Soltanov also noted the critical role of green molecules, including green hydrogen, green ammonia, and potentially E-fuels. "Without them, it will be impossible to achieve a complete transition in the energy sphere," he asserted.
