The construction of the Paks II. Nuclear Power Plant has reached a new milestone with the successful completion of soil stabilization works under the nuclear island of Unit 5, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó announced.

The Minister highlighted that recent energy policy setbacks have underscored the importance of countries producing their own energy. He stressed the need to accelerate the construction of two new units at the power plant, stating,

given Hungary’s capabilities, this means that we have the task of speeding up the construction of the two new units of the Paks nuclear power plant.”

The current state of construction is progressing well. The soil stabilization works for Unit 5 have been completed, and similar work for Unit 6 has commenced. In addition, 24,000 piles have already been driven into the ground, representing nearly a third of the total needed for the project.

Further construction activities are on the horizon. Péter Szijjártó mentioned that he recently spoke with Rosatom CEO Alexey Likhachev to review the next steps. Preparations for full soil removal are underway, with plans to start these works in mid-September. He added that over a thousand people are already on-site, stating, “the number of workers will increase significantly in the coming period.”

Significant progress has been made at the Paks Nuclear Power Plant, with crucial soil works now completed. The focus is on accelerating the next phases of construction to boost the country’s energy independence and secure its future energy supply.
