Hydrogen Network Construction Kicks off in Hamburg

30 Aug 2024  by hydrogenfuelnews

HH-WIN and the HGHH is now underway.

Construction has begun on the hydrogen network HH-WIN and the Hamburg Green Hydrogen Hub (HGHH). Both the hydrogen industry network and the hub are being built on what was once the site of the former Moorburg Power Plant and are expected to be operational in a few years. If all goes according to plan, they should be up and running in 2027.

Hamburg Green Hydrogen Hub

The HGHH isn’t just any hydrogen hub. It is one of the first projects across the globe to decarbonize an entire port economy. It has the potential to decarbonize industry and mobility in Hamburg to sectors with a high demand for zero-carbon hydrogen energy. The plan is to build a 100 MW electrolyzer for renewable hydrogen at the site of the former Moorburg power plant and begin commercial hydrogen production from renewable energy sources (using wind and solar to split water into hydrogen and oxygen in a large electrolyzer) as early as 2027. This will result in clean energy for mobility, heat, process gas and natural gas replacement.

The climate-neutral economy in Hamburg is expected to become a reality with the HGHH, an import strategy and the hydrogen network. The HH-WIN network being built on Moorburger Strasse and Altenwerder Hauptdeich will supply companies south of the Elbe with green H2 from 2027.

A hydrogen network that improves with age.

The HH-WIN hydrogen network is key to helping Hamburg in gaining its independence from natural gas imports. By 2027, the grid is to supply the first H2 consumers with energy from the HGHH electrolyzer.

After 2030, it is anticipated that HH-WIN will supply so many industrial companies within Hamburg with green hydrogen that it’ll be possible to replace one third of the region’s natural gas consumption with climate-neural hydrogen. This has the potential to lower carbon emissions by about 1.4 million annually.

Hamburg, Germany’s key hydrogen center.

Hamburg is becoming a major hydrogen center in Germany and Europe, said Jens Kersten, Senator for the Environment. According to Kersten, an integrated approach has been established across all stages of the value chain within Hamburg. This includes hydrogen production, import structures, hydrogen pipeline infrastructure, and key customers in the industry.

The hydrogen network will be linked to the European pipeline system, making it possible for Hamburg to secure green power from other region, while also shipping imports and locally generated hydrogen.
