The Central Design Bureau (TsKBM – Tsentralnovo konstruktorskovo ByuroMashinostroeniya) in St Petersburg, part of Rosatom’s Mechanical Engineering Division, has shipped 88 units of filter equipment for multi-level gas treatment systems for four nuclear power units under construction at China’s Tianwan and Xudabao NPPs.

These are traps for separating droplet moisture from the vapour-gas environment allowing the gas flow to be directed to the next purification stages – zeolite and aerosol filters for deep and fine drying of radioactive gas flow – as well as other types of filters and adsorbers to ensure reliable gas purification.

Zeolite filters are designed for deep drying of radioactive gas flow; one filter contains 340 liters of zeolite adsorbent. Aerosol filters are designed for fine purification of radioactive gas-air mixtures from condensate particles. The filter element of such filters is made of sheets of super-thin fiberglass.

“The development and manufacture of equipment for gas purification systems is a developing area of our company’s work. TsKBM supplies equipment not only to the power units of the Tianwan and Xudabao NPPs in China, but also to the El Dabaa NPP in Egypt. Our products are distinguished by high reliability with a service life of 60 years,” noted Nikolai Vasiliev, Chief Designer of remote-controlled and transport-technological equipment at TsKBM.

Tianwan NPP units 1&2 with VVER-1000 reactors were handed over by Rosatom to the customer and put into warranty operation in 2007. Units 3&4 were put into warranty operation in 2018. The same year, an intergovernmental protocol and a framework contract was signed with Rosatom for the construction of Tianwan 7&8 and Xudabao 3&4 with VVER-1200 reactors.
