Nexans Clinched A Landmark Deal to Provide 1000km of Subsea High Voltage Cables for Ørsted

French power solutions company Nexans has clinched a landmark deal to provide the subsea cabling for US windfarms built by Danish energy giant Ørsted.

The Paris-headquartered group has been chosen by Ørsted and US transmission builder Eversource to supply up to 1000 km of subsea high voltage export cables in an agreement that lasts until 2027 and with the first delivery due by 2022.

Vincent Dessale, senior executive vice-president of Nexans’ Subsea and Land Systems Business group, said the deal would “accelerate the energy transition in North America and bring Nexans’ industry-leading subsea cable technology to the US”.

To fulfil the contract, Nexans is to invest in a manufacturing centre in the US, which it says will be the first plant to manufacture subsea high-voltage cables in the country.

The French company has a strategy to increase its submarine cable installation capacity and is building a state-of-the-art cable-laying vessel with a 10,000-tonne capacity.

Last month, Nexans secured a two-year global supply contract to provide Vestas Wind Systems with cable kits for onshore wind turbines in Europe, the US and China.
