Germany is increasingly obtaining electricity from renewable energy sources. In the first half of 2024, the share of electricity generated from wind power, solar photovoltaic plants, hydropower and biomass reached a record 61.5 percent of total electricity production, according to the Federal Statistical Office.
The majority of energy production came from wind power, which accounted for 33 percent of the total. The 73.4 billion kilowatt hours produced in this windy first half of the year was an increase of 11.9 percent compared to the same period in the previous year.
Solar photovoltaic power production grew by 8.3 percent, driven by the installation of new plants, to reach 30.5 billion kilowatt hours. This represents about 14% of total electricity production.
