Vienna's main power company said on Friday it would phase out its use of Russian natural gas in 2025 as Austria steps up efforts to cut its reliance on energy supplies from Russia following Moscow's 2022 invasion of Ukraine.

Wien Energie said clients, power plants and district heating would be completely supplied with non-Russian gas and that procurement for 2025 had been carried out in the past few days.

Much of the alternative gas supply was being drawn from sources in the North Sea, the company said in a statement.

The European Union drastically reduced its reliance on Russian gas after start of the Ukraine war, leaving Austria as the EU country most reliant on Russian supplies.

"Supply security is our top priority," said Peter Hanke, the city councillor responsible for financial and economic affairs.
