Westbridge Renewable Energy’s subsidiary Dolcy Solar has secured approval from the Alberta Utilities Commission (AUC) for the 300MWac Dolcy Solar + Energy Storage project in Canada.

The project encompasses a solar power plant with a capacity of up to 300MWac [megawatts alternating current] combined with battery energy storage systems (BESS) capable of storing up to 200 megawatt hours (MWh).

It will feature a substation to support the integration and distribution of energy generated by the facility.

The approval is contingent upon the conditions set by the Hydro and Electric Energy Act and the Alberta Utilities Commission Act.

Westbridge anticipates filing for interconnection approvals to the AUC in the first quarter of 2025.

The Dolcy Solar project represents the company’s third initiative in Alberta to secure AUC approval.

Westbridge Renewable Energy Corporation director and chief operating officer Maggie McKenna stated: “We are pleased to announce the successful AUC approval for our Dolcy project, which is expected to power more than 72,000 Alberta homes.

“This marks another significant achievement for Westbridge in furtherance of our commitment to energy transition by making reliable, low-cost renewable energy available to Albertans.

“This approval represents a positive step forward for solar energy in the region, recognising the benefits of combined land-use through agrivoltaics to deliver a compelling mix of clean energy, agricultural productivity and job creation.”

In June 2023, Westbridge Renewable’s subsidiary, Sunnynook Solar Energy, obtained approval to construct the 270MW Sunnynook solar and energy storage project in Alberta.

Sunnynook secured approval from AUC to construct the project, which features a BESS with a capacity of 200MWh.

Westbridge acquired the Sunnynook project in December 2021. It is located in Special Area No 2, 53km from Hanna, Alberta, and covers 985 acres.
