GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy (GEH)
Canada-based Velan, a manufacturer of industrial valves, has signed a main services agreement with GE Vernova Nuclear subsidiary GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy (GEH) as supplier for Ontario Power Generation’s Darlington New Nuclear Project – the first small modular reactor (SMR) initiative in North America.

Under the agreement, GEH placed an initial purchase order with Velan for the development of advanced technology, engineering support, and critical valves essential to the safe and efficient operation of GEH’s first BWRX-300 SMR. The order provides for three additional units for deployment at the Darlington site in Ontario, with completion expected by 2034. Initial site preparation work has been completed, and construction is scheduled to start in 2025, with initial commissioning planned by the end of 2029.

“The partnership strengthens the Canadian nuclear supply chain, and positions Velan as a strategic global supplier. The BWRX-300 is a key element in the energy transition, helping to reduce costs and achieve decarbonization objectives,” GE Vernova noted.

“Velan’s involvement in this project highlights our decades-long leadership in the nuclear power sector, said James A Mannebach, Velan Chairman & CEO. “Our valves have supported some of the world’s most critical nuclear initiatives, and we remain the only manufacturer to supply nuclear valves to such a diverse range of reactor types globally. As we approach our 75th anniversary in 2025, we are remarkably well-positioned to support this landmark project.”
