Bloom Energy Lands SOFC Deals in South Korea, Taiwan and the US

Bloom Energy has signed agreements to deliver its solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC) to three different locations, including what it describes as the “largest” single-site SOFC installation in South Korea.

Deals were inked with SK Eternix (South Korea), Taiwan’s Quanta Computer and FPM Development in Los Angeles, the US, on November 7. The 80MW project being developed in partnership with SK Eternix will use Bloom fuel cells to power two eco parks in the North Chungcheong Province.

The project finance, led by Korea Development Bank, marks the “largest project financing for fuel cells in the history of South Korea.” The initiative is scheduled to begin commercial operations in 2025.

KR Sridhar, Founder, Chairman and CEO of Bloom Energy, said, “This groundbreaking 80MW installation underscores the scalability and reliability of our SOFC technology for large and complex projects.

“Our collaboration with SK Eternix is a testament to our ability to build strong partnerships with global leaders and bring Bloom’s clean, resilient power solutions to international markets.”

Furthermore, Bloom will install an SOFC microgrid next year for Quanta in Taiwan, to provide the power needed for the AI sector. “Leaders in the AI industry like Quanta simply do not enjoy the luxury of being able to wait for traditional grid infrastructure, because the marketplace won’t wait for them,” explained Aman Joshi, Bloom’s global Chief Commercial Officer (CCO).

“Bloom’s SOFC microgrids provide AI customers with a flexible, pay-as-you-grow solution that is ready to scale and avoids additional transmission or distribution upgrades. This effectively shortens interconnection permitting associated with traditional infrastructures.”

Additionally, the company will provide 20MW of SOFCs across two repurposed commercial sites in LA, selected for their location on the grid to support growing electrical demand.

Joshi added, “As states grapple with increasing demand and penetration of intermittent renewables, Bloom’s technology is uniquely positioned to quickly deliver reliable, distributed power and mitigate shortages.”

“The selection of Bloom’s solution for this project clearly demonstrates our ability to address power shortfalls even in the nation’s most populous metropolitan areas.”

The agreement is part of an initial deal with FPM and the two companies are working together to deliver the solutions by the end of 2024.
