De Nora to Build 50-Tonne Hydrogen Plant in Sardinia for Raw Material Production

19 Nov 2024

Italian electrochemical major De Nora is planning to build a 50-tonne-per-year green hydrogen plant in Sardinia to power a local raw materials firm’s industrial plant.

Having partnered with Maffei Sarda Silicati, De Nora will build the project on a decommissioned industrial area in the Ossi municipality, which Maffei Sarda Silicati is redeveloping.

Hydrogen will be produced using power from a 1.5MW photovoltaic plant in the same area for use by Maffei to partially replace fossil fuels currently used in its industrial plant which produces raw materials such as silica, slays, glass sand and more.

With the energy carrier set to be used in the drying process of sands minded by the firm, the companies believe it will offer “significant decarbonisation benefits.”

Expected to use De Nora’s 1MW Dragonfly® pressurised alkaline electrolyser plant, the companies have said excess hydrogen could be used in other applications in Sardinia, such as mobility, power generation and heating.

“We are proud to have been selected as a partner in this project that will significantly boost Sardinia’s green transition,” said Paolo Dellachà, CEO of De Nora. “Our electrolyser, developed in-house and patented, is confirmed to be a leading product, particularly suitable for local industrial needs, as a modular plug-and-play solution.”

“This is yet another step that Maffei Sarda Silicat is taking to achieve zero emissions within all of its activities and increasingly in line with its policy of respect for the environment,” stressed Maffei Sarda Silicati President, Federico Fiorelli.
