Arevon Energy Completes Vikings Solar+Storage Peaker Plant in California

28 Nov 2024

Renewables developer Arevon Energy has cut the ribbon on what is being hailed as the US’ first utility-scale solar peaker plant, the Vikings solar plus storage project in Imperial County, California.

The $529 million project includes 157MWdc solar array coupled with 150MW/600MWh of battery energy storage.

San Diego Community Power, a community driven energy provider, has signed a long term offtake agreement to help provide power to over 1 million customers in the area.

According to Arevon, Vikings will allow San Diego Community Power to shift low-cost daytime solar energy to higher-cost peak demand periods, such as late afternoons and evenings, with the battery storage system able to adjust capacity in seconds.

The project includes a Tesla megapack battery energy storage system, First Solar thin film photovoltaic solar panels, and Nextracker smart solar trackers.

The Vikings project, named after the Holtville High School mascot, provided scholarships for deserving Holtville High School students to use for college tuition costs and was also responsible for creating jobs for more than 170 personnel.

Executive director at the Holtville Chamber of Commerce, Kevin Smith, commented in a statement: “Vikings’ advanced design sets the standard for safe and reliable solar-plus-storage configurations. The project incorporates solar panels, trackers, and batteries that showcase the growing strength of US renewable energy manufacturing. Its completion marks a significant milestone for Arevon, as we continue to meet California’s clean energy needs while advancing energy security and independence nationwide.”

Arevon closed financing on the Vikings solar plus storage project in November 2023 with a combination of debt financing and tax credit transfer.

Arevon’s renewable energy portfolio includes nearly 2,500MW of projects in operation and more than 1,250MW under construction.
