TotalEnergies has paused its Attentive Energy array planned for the coast of New York state.
The project is a joint venture with Corio, and has a planned capacity of as much as 3GW split across two projects.
Chief executive Patrick Pouyanné (pictured) told a conference in London that he had decided to delay the project, citing the Trump administration's opposition to offshore wind, according to multiple reports.
Attentive had previously pulled out of New York's fifth round solicitation.
The decision comes just weeks after the election of Donald Trump, who has vowed to "end" the offshore wind industry in the US "on day one" after taking office.
Trump has also appointed fracking executive and oil and gas hardliner Chris Wright to head up the Department of Energy.
