Sinopec Launches Hong Kong’s First Public Hydrogen Fueling Station

02 Dec 2024

Sinopec has inaugurated Hong Kong's first public hydrogen fueling station, the Aotou hydrogen station, in Yuen Long, marking a significant step in the region's green energy transition.

This development is part of the broader "Hong Kong Hydrogen Energy Development Strategy," aiming to establish Hong Kong as a leader in the green hydrogen industry.

Sinopec Limited has officially opened Hong Kong's first public hydrogen fueling station, the Aotou hydrogen station, located in Yuen Long, New Territories. This pioneering station is the first in Hong Kong to integrate multiple fueling options including oil, gas, hydrogen, electricity, and additional service facilities. The launch ceremony, held on the 26th, underscored the strategic importance of this development in the region's energy landscape.

During the completion ceremony, Tse Chin-wan, the Secretary for Environment and Ecology of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Government, highlighted the government's efforts to advance hydrogen energy applications. These efforts include breaking down regulatory barriers and promoting innovative projects that align with the Hong Kong Hydrogen Energy Development Strategy announced earlier.

The HKSAR Government is also actively working towards establishing a regulatory framework conducive to the growth of the hydrogen industry. It plans to propose amendments to the Gas Safety Ordinance next year, aiming to introduce a certification model for "green hydrogen" or "low carbon hydrogen" by 2027. This initiative is expected to position Hong Kong as a demonstration base for the green hydrogen industry, showcasing pioneering energy solutions that could serve as a model for other cities globally.

The Aotou hydrogen station not only represents a milestone for Hong Kong in terms of infrastructural development but also reflects a growing commitment to sustainable energy solutions that could significantly reduce the region’s carbon footprint.
