RWE to Test EnerVenue’s Metal-Hydrogen Batteries in Milwaukee Pilot Project

German multinational energy company RWE will use EnerVenue’s metal-hydrogen batteries for a data-collecting pilot project in Milwaukee, the US.

The pilot aims to validate EnerVenue’s energy storage vessels’ (ESVs) cycling flexibility, charge and discharge characteristics, duration, temperature performance and efficiency validation.

H2 View understands that the ESVs can have more than 30,000 cycles and can cycle up to three times per day “without rest.” Additionally, EnerVenue has stated they are “more readily recyclable than lithium-ion, making the batteries especially sustainable and environmentally responsible.”

RWE will use the data collected to align EnerVenue’s technology for potential future RWE applications.

“Grid-scale energy storage that promises to be safer, flexible, and more durable offers great potential for meeting our continuously growing demand for energy,” explained Andrea Hu-Bianco, Senior Vice-President of Engineering at RWE Clean Energy.

“Meeting clean energy goals will necessitate several capable and scalable solutions, and we look forward to assessing the performance of EnerVenue’s metal-hydrogen technology as part of our pilot programme at our testing facility in Milwaukee.”

Majid Keshavarz, EnerVenue’s Chief Technology Officer (CTO), said that collaborating with RWE allows the firm to “showcase the capabilities” of its technology and “demonstrate how it can drive the future of clean energy expansion and grid resilience.”

The CTO added, “ESVs are built to meet the demands of even the most diverse and challenging clean energy applications, providing a reliable, long-lasting and sustainable answer for large-scale renewable energy projects.”

In September 2023, the energy storage company unveiled its next-generation metal-hydrogen batteries, which it said are suitable for stationary storage projects.

The company said they deliver 50% more energy storage capacity than its previous versions; have improved materials efficiency, the new ESVs increase energy density by 100%; and nominal power performance improvements by 150%.
