BuhaWind Secures Grid Connection Approval for 2 GW Floating Wind Farm in Philippines

10 Dec 2024
The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) has approved the grid connection for BuhaWind Energy Philippines’ 2 GW floating offshore wind farm in Northern Luzon.

The System Impact Study Final Report for BuhaWind Energy Philippines’ 2 GW offshore wind farm was issued by NGCP and accepted last week.

The full project capacity has been approved, marking a milestone in its development as the developers have secured final and unconditional approval for grid connection, according to Copenhagen Energy (CE), which is working with PetroGreen Energy Corporation (PGEC) to develop the wind farm.

This paves the way for the next phase of development, including detailed design and schedule of the overall grid connection, said the Danish company.

PGEC and CE began to co-develop projects off the coast of the Philippines in 2020 and formalized their collaboration by creating a partnership, BuhaWind Energy Philippines, in 2022.

The partnership is working on developing three floating offshore wind farms off the coast of the Philippines, with a potential combined capacity of 4 GW.

Northern Luzon, located offshore of Ilocos Norte, is planned to produce 2 GW of electricity and is expected to be fully operational in 2030.

Additionally, BuhaWind is developing two other projects with an expected capacity each of 1,000 MW in Northern Mindoro and East Panay.

In October, the floating offshore wind projects were awarded the Green Lane Certificate by the Philippine Board of Investments (BOI).
