DH2 to Build Spain’s Largest Green Hydrogen Production Network in Extremadura

12 Dec 2024

DH2 Energy has unveiled plans to develop four large-scale green hydrogen facilities in Spain’s Extremadura region, with a combined capacity of 1.5GW.

Research from AeH2 highlights that DH2 Energy’s portfolio represents the largest renewable hydrogen production capacity currently under development in Spain, generating more than 75,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually.

The Spanish firm’s most advanced project in development is in Raviza, which is scheduled to produce 25,000 tonnes of hydrogen per year. The three further initiatives in Extremadura are ‘Badajoz 2, 3 and 4’, capable of producing 8,000-25,000 tonnes annually and located across Mérida, Badajoz, La Roca de la Sierra.

The developments underway represent a total investment of €2.25bn ($2.36bn), according to DH2 Energy.

The company’s Managing Director, Marcos López-Brea Baquero, highlighted the region’s abundant renewable resources as a key driver for its hydrogen production potential.

“What’s more, there’s a willingness to encourage deployment on the part of both the regional government and the local councils in the towns where DH2 Energy is building plants,” Baquero added.

Alongside its Extremadura hydrogen production network, DH2 received the green light to develop its Hysencia project in Aragon last July, after securing an Integrated Environmental Authorisation.

The 35MW electrolysis and 49MWp solar photovoltaic plant will produce 99GWh of renewable electricity each year to power the electrolyser, with operations anticipated to begin in 2027.

“Extremadura also has a favourable regulatory framework that includes specific legislation designed to promote renewable hydrogen. In addition, a section of the hydrogen transport network planned by Enagás will be built in Extremadura.”

DH2 later launched an auction to secure offtake hydrogen from the 35MW plant. In November (2024), the auction opened with a call to all companies interested in buying the 1,700 tonnes of green hydrogen produced by the plant per year.
