Moco Moco Hydropower Plant Restored and Upgraded

13 Dec 2024

GUGLER Water Turbines has announced the successful restoration of the Moco Moco Hydropower Plant in Guyana. Originally commissioned in 1999, the plant was damaged by a landslide in 2003 and had been out of service since. After an extensive rehabilitation process, the plant is now fully operational with an increased capacity of 0.7 MW, up from 0.5 MW.

The hydropower plant is located on the Moco Moco Creek, part of the Amazon River system. The plant features a high net head of 393.4 meters and a flow rate of 0.22 m³/s. It is powered by two horizontal Pelton turbines, which operate at 1,200 rpm, ensuring high efficiency in challenging conditions.

This restoration addresses the growing energy needs of the Lethem area, providing reliable, renewable energy to the region. GUGLER Water Turbines emphasized that the enhanced capacity supports Guyana’s increasing demand for sustainable energy, contributing to a more energy-secure future.
