Building Materials Manufacturer to Buy Electricity From Iberdrola’s German Offshore Wind Farm

23 Dec 2024
Iberdrola and Schwenk Zement have signed a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA) for output from the 315 MW Windanker offshore wind farm in Germany.

During the contract duration, 1,500 GWh will be supplied to Schwenk from the offshore wind farm currently under construction in the Baltic Sea.

With the supply from the Windanker, the building materials manufacturer can cover about 20 per cent of its electricity needs from certified alternative sources, based on current electricity demand, said Iberdrola.

“Our commitment to sustainability is reflected in our continuous efforts to reduce specific electricity demand, improve thermal energy efficiency, and lower CO2 emissions. Another important component is the gradual increase in the proportion of green electricity at SCHWENK through our own photovoltaic projects,” added Thomas Spannagl, CEO of Schwenk Building Materials Group.

The Windanker offshore wind farm is located approximately 38 kilometres northeast of the German island of Rügen, covering an area of about 17.9 square kilometres.

The project will comprise 21 Siemens Gamesa 15 MW wind turbines installed on top of the monopiles provided by the Navantia-Windar consortium.

Recently, Japan’s Kansai Electric Power (Kansai) signed a power purchase agreement with Iberdrola to buy a 49 per cent stake in the 315 MW wind farm.

Windanker is expected to be connected to the grid in 2026.
