New Zealand Firms Collaborate to Design Hydrogen-Powered RIB

23 Dec 2024

Fabrum and King Watercraft have collaborated to design a hydrogen-powered rigid inflatable boat (RIB), suitable for tourism, commercial and leisure activities.

Set to begin sea trials in 2025, the H2Ocean boat can reportedly be “adapted to suit the environment and operations of the end user.”

The boat features 18kg of 350 bar hydrogen gas, which is supplied to a fuel cell and maintains charging to a battery bank that is used to power the two electric stern legs.

The New Zealand-based firms have stated that the boat can carry up to 12 people and will likely be used for tourism and ferrying activities or fewer people and specialist equipment for coastguard, servicing, and event-based activities.

Christopher Boyle, Farbum’s Executive Chair, claimed hydrogen propulsion can support “a new future pathway for the marine industry to decarbonise.”

Boyle added, “This initiative has added significance as our companies are based in Christchurch, fast becoming known as the hydrogen city of New Zealand.”

Will King, Founder and Managing Director of King Watercraft, said, “For over 10 years, we have focused on producing bespoke RIBs designed specifically for the needs of our customers in New Zealand and beyond.

“With a focus on being at the forefront of sustainable propulsion, the shared values of King Watercraft and Fabrum brought this idea to life and together, this project offers a lighter footprint for the marine industry here and around the world.”

Last year, Watersportverbond launched a hydrogen-powered rib ahead of the 2023 World Sailing Championships in the Hague, the Netherlands.
