"Fjord Base is a very suitable location for the production of green ammonia based on existing industrial areas, infrastructure and maritime activity. The market for green ammonia is constantly developing, and with stricter emission requirements, especially in the maritime sector, it is expected that the need for carbon-free fuel will increase significantly from 2030 onwards," says CEO of North Ammonia, Mikkel Tørud.
"It is very pleasing to see that the plans for the establishment of North Ammonia at Fjord Base are now taking shape and coming one step closer to realization. Fjord Base has significant maritime activity, and short-haul access to green fuel for shipping will strengthen our position as a maritime hub, as well as provide positive ripple effects in the form of jobs. The production of green ammonia will also lay the foundation for circular economy value chains, and thus strengthen Fjord Base as a leading industrial cluster in the green shift," says CEO of Fjord Base Gruppen, Ole Schanke Eikum.
North Ammonia AS and Fjord Base Holding AS entered into a letter of intent in 2022 to explore the possibilities of establishing a green ammonia production facility at Fjord Base. The project was assessed as mature by Linja and Statnett earlier this year and is now in the queue for reservation of grid capacity for power.
"In this region, there is a significant power surplus, and it is therefore very important that the power grid is systematically further developed to ensure the establishment of new and future-oriented jobs," adds Mikkel Tørud.
North Ammonia is a long-term player developing production facilities for carbon-free fuel based in Norway. With stable access to renewable energy, a strong maritime cluster and long experience from the land-based process industry, Norway has a good starting point for the production of competitive green ammonia. The company was established in 2021 and is owned by Grieg New Energy AS - part of Grieg Maritime Group - and Vergia AS - part of Swiss Life Asset Managers.
Fjord Base is Norway's largest supply base, with over 1000 acres of developed area and extensive infrastructure. Since its establishment in 1985, the base has gained extensive experience in property development, logistics and operations. In addition to offshore activities, Fjord Base is actively working to facilitate new industries and businesses, including offshore wind, fossil-free fuels, and other green initiatives. The company is currently owned by the infrastructure company Ancala Partners LLP and Semi AS.
