High-Tech Eco-Friendly Ship Market, Such as Hydrogen Ship Research and Development, ‘Jeong-Jo-Joon'

HJ Heavy Industries announced on the 30th that it has obtained approval for the design concept (Approval in Principle) for an 88,000㎥ super-large eco-friendly ammonia carrier (VLAC) from Lloyd's Shipment (LR) in the UK.

HJ Heavy Industries and Lloyds Shipment signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) in July to jointly develop next-generation super-large ammonia carriers and have been focusing on research activities for about six months.

HJ Heavy Industries explained, "Based on our technology accumulated through research and development of eco-friendly ships such as LNG DF (dual fuel) and methanol-powered container ships, we have been certified for the basic and structural design of 88,000㎥ super-sized ammonia carriers that meet all design load conditions required by the ship."

With the approval of the conceptual design, HJ Heavy Industries plans to actively respond to the demand for the decarbonized ship market and prepare for the increasing demand for orders in the direction of further development of ammonia-powered carriers.

Ammonia is a clean alternative fuel without carbon dioxide emissions and is attracting attention as a suitable ship fuel for the carbon-free era along with hydrogen. In particular, orders for ships using ammonia as the main fuel, including ammonia carriers, are expected to increase steadily as the International Maritime Organization (IMO) formalizes its "net-zero" drive aimed at achieving zero carbon emissions for ships by 2050.
