The company has signed procurement and construction contracts for the project, it said on Thursday. US-based Tesla Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) will deliver its battery technology and will oversee the facility’s operations under a long-term service agreement.
The Mannington battery energy storage system (BESS) will be installed in proximity to an existing 400-kV substation. Once in operation, it will provide two hours of storage capacity. The system will store surplus renewable power and feed it back into the grid during peak demand, thus helping to ease grid constraints and enhance the network’s reliability.
Mannington is the first one in Cubico’s global battery storage pipeline to reach the construction phase. The British firm currently has 1.3 GW of BESS schemes at an advanced stage and an additional 2.3 GW of projects in the early development stages.
