Bridgend Council Backs Green Hydrogen and Solar Energy Project

Bridgend County Borough Council's Development Control Committee has expressed intent to approve Marubeni Europower's planning application for a hydrogen and solar energy development, subject to conditions and the Welsh Government's approval. The decision was made during a special meeting on February 20th, 2025, after council members visited the proposed sites in Bryncethin and Brynmenyn. Additionally, the Committee granted HyBont's Hazardous Substances Consent application with an overwhelming majority, following a conclusion by the Health and Safety Executive that the proposed operations pose minimal risk to the surrounding population.

The Brynmenyn Industrial Estate facility will feature a hydrogen production plant powered by electrolysers, hydrogen storage, and a refueling station. The accompanying solar farm in Bryncethin will provide renewable energy for the site. The HyBont project aims to support Bridgend's transition to sustainable energy by deploying innovative technology to produce green hydrogen and contribute to a cleaner future for Wales.

George Dodd, Senior Vice-President at Marubeni Europower, expressed gratitude for the committee's support and stated the company's commitment to working with local stakeholders and the community as the project advances. They now await a final decision from the Welsh Government.
