NZTC Takes Its Flagship Offshore Hydrogen Project to the Next Phase

26 Feb 2025  by offshore energy
The HOP2 project, spearheaded by Net Zero Technology Centre (NZTC), is advancing into its second phase with a focus on feasibility studies and design work. This groundbreaking initiative aims to harness the existing oil and gas infrastructure for large-scale offshore green hydrogen production, marking a critical step in the global transition to renewable energy. By repurposing legacy assets, the project not only reduces emissions but also repurposes valuable industrial resources.

Phase 2 has seen the awarding of a concept definition contract to Apollo, a leading engineering and energy advisory consultancy based in Scotland, to develop detailed designs for a 500 MW offshore hydrogen production facility. This builds on the successful completion of Phase 1, which utilized the existing infrastructure at Ninian Central Platform. Apollo is responsible for integrating essential systems like electrolyzers, water treatment, and hydrogen compression, while also addressing key safety and environmental challenges to ensure compliance and sustainability.

Emma Swiergon, Technology Manager at NZTC, emphasized the importance of affordable and efficient hydrogen production at scale: “Affordable, efficient hydrogen production at scale is key to establishing the UK as a global hydrogen leader while supporting the transition to net zero. The HOP2 project demonstrates the potential of repurposed assets to enhance hydrogen production, and with Apollo, we’re excited to advance phase two.”

Phil Westmorland, Apollo’s Director of Decarbonisation, praised the collaboration: “We’re delighted to continue our partnership with NZTC and build on the successes of Phase 1. This next phase is a significant opportunity to demonstrate how legacy infrastructure can play a role in the energy transition.”

The project’s progress underscores the feasibility of utilizing existing industrial assets for green hydrogen production, highlighting the potential for sustainable energy solutions and decarbonization efforts. With the expertise of Apollo and the vision of NZTC, the HOP2 project is poised to make a substantial contribution to the global transition to renewable energy sources.
