Study Highlights Geothermal Potential and Regulatory Challenges in Moldova

27 Feb 2025  by thinkgeoenergy
Wedoany.com Report-Feb 27, Aimed at reducing reliance on external energy sources and addressing climate change, Moldova’s Ministry of Energy, along with UNIDO and the Global Environment Facility (GEF), has published a comprehensive study proposing a geothermal development strategy. The plan, with a focus on 2035, aims to integrate geothermal energy into the country’s energy mix. By leveraging this resource, Moldova could enhance its sustainable development efforts while minimizing its carbon footprint.

The study highlights the potential of geothermal energy for heating residential, commercial, and industrial buildings, as well as for industrial applications like steam generation and hot water supply. Shallow geothermal sources can be used for urban heating, while deep sources are suitable for industrial and agricultural uses. Pilot projects are already underway, including wells in Chisinau (maximum temperature of 53°C at 1,140m depth), Cahul (500-600m depths), and villages like Gura Cainarului and Marculesti in the Floresti district.

The document also outlines the existing regulatory framework, which already supports geothermal development, but identifies gaps that require new regulations. These include defining geothermal resources, licensing sites, environmental protections, promoting energy efficiency, offering fiscal incentives, fostering public-private partnerships, and ensuring professional training and monitoring of geothermal activities.

This strategy not only aims to reduce energy dependence but also to stimulate economic growth and create jobs. By 2035, Moldova could see significant progress in advancing its geothermal potential, making it a key step toward achieving national and regional sustainability goals.
