Xiong’An New Area, China Records Steady Growth of Geothermal Heating

On the 8th anniversary of its establishment, the Xiong’An New Area in Hebei, China, has achieved remarkable progress in geothermal energy. The area now boasts a geothermal heating capacity of 12 million square meters, representing 27% of the newly constructed zones. This figure is expected to rise to 30% by next year.

With an average household size of 42 square meters, geothermal energy is now heating approximately 285,000 households in the area. This milestone highlights the efficiency and sustainability of the region’s energy solutions.

Originally, geothermal resources in Xiong’An were utilized for hot springs and heating, but the lack of strict regulations led to overexploitation and environmental issues. However, strict policies now ensure balanced production and reinjection, preventing ground subsidence and maintaining sustainable energy extraction.

The area operates a hybrid energy system, combining geothermal heat with natural gas. During extreme cold, natural gas supplements geothermal heating, while surplus heat powers the energy stations emission-free. Additionally, a waste-to-energy facility provides extra heat.

Xiong’An’s development underscores the potential of geothermal energy as a reliable and sustainable solution, balancing environmental and economic benefits. The focus on shallow geothermal not only powers heating but also harnesses cooling from soil, making it an excellent renewable option.
