Crowley Unveils LNG Microgrid Plan at San Juan Logistics Hub

03 Apr 2025  by offshore energy
Crowley, a U.S.-based company specialising in maritime, energy, and logistics solutions, will install a liquefied natural gas (LNG)-powered microgrid at its Isla Grande logistics terminal in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Announced in late March 2025, this system aims to deliver a dependable energy source for the terminal’s daily activities, including powering equipment, refrigerated containers, and administrative and maintenance buildings.

Set to be operational by early 2026, the microgrid is expected to provide cost-effective and cleaner energy compared to the current public grid supply. Crowley notes that this will lower carbon dioxide emissions, contributing to a reduced environmental impact in the area. The project supports the company’s goal of fostering a more sustainable supply chain in Puerto Rico.

This development builds on Crowley’s recent launch of American Energy, described as the first U.S.-flagged LNG carrier to transport LNG from the U.S. mainland to Puerto Rico. To facilitate this, Crowley partnered with Naturgy, a Spanish energy company, in a multi-year deal to supply LNG to Naturgy’s facility in Peñuelas, a town on Puerto Rico’s southern coast. The 130,400 cubic metre vessel operates under the U.S. Coast Guard Authorization Act of 1996.

Crowley’s CEO commented on the microgrid initiative: “This is a step towards reliable and sustainable energy solutions that enhance our operations while supporting the region’s needs.” The company also manages an LNG truck-loading facility in Peñuelas, distributing over 94 million gallons of LNG, further strengthening its energy presence on the island.

The firm has invested more than $550 million to improve trade in Puerto Rico, including LNG-powered container ships and upgraded port facilities at Isla Grande. These efforts reflect Crowley’s focus on integrating cleaner energy into its logistics and shipping services.

Beyond Puerto Rico, Crowley is advancing sustainable technology across its U.S. operations. In June 2024, the company marked a milestone with the christening of eWolf, an all-electric tugboat powered by ABB, celebrated as the first of its kind in America. The event took place at the Port of San Diego, showcasing Crowley’s commitment to alternative energy sources for its fleet.

The microgrid project in San Juan highlights Crowley’s strategy to blend efficiency with environmental responsibility. By leveraging LNG and innovative infrastructure, the company aims to meet growing energy demands while maintaining a focus on sustainability across its operations.
