Rajasthan Part I Power Transmission, a unit of India’s Adani Energy Solutions, has engaged a consortium of Hitachi Energy and Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) to handle a high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission project. The contract involves designing and constructing HVDC terminals for a 6GW, 950km transmission line stretching from the Bhadla renewable energy zone in Rajasthan to Fatehpur in Uttar Pradesh, India.

Hitachi Energy has a global legacy of integrating over 150GW of HVDC links into power systems.

The ±800kV bi-pole, bi-directional HVDC terminals will enable flexible power flow management, essential for grid stability as India expands its renewable energy capacity. This transmission line, set to supply electricity to 60 million households, is expected to be operational by 2029. It plays a vital role in India’s target of reaching 500GW of renewable energy by 2030.

Adani Energy Solutions CEO Kandarp Patel said: “By enabling efficient evacuation of renewable energy and connecting it to the national grid, AESL (Adani Energy Solutions Limited) is playing its role in India’s decarbonisation journey.” He emphasized that the project will use advanced technology and methods to ensure timely completion with minimal environmental impact. The initiative includes key components like converter transformers, AC/DC control systems, thyristor valves, shunt reactors, filter capacitors, MV Switchgear, and 765kV/400kV grid connections, along with auxiliary systems.

Hitachi Energy India’s managing director and CEO, N Venu, commented: “For the last 75 years, Hitachi Energy in India has been involved in numerous nation-building power projects, including a majority of the HVDC links. We are immensely proud of our role in strengthening the country’s energy system.” He noted that securing two major HVDC contracts in a short period reflects the company’s technical expertise and delivery capabilities. In December 2024, Hitachi Energy also won $2.08bn contracts from Amprion, a German transmission operator, for four converter stations across two HVDC projects.

This Bhadla-Fatehpur transmission line underscores India’s commitment to expanding renewable energy infrastructure. By linking a major solar zone in Rajasthan to Uttar Pradesh, the project supports the efficient distribution of clean power across regions. The collaboration between Adani Energy Solutions, Hitachi Energy, and BHEL highlights a blend of local and global expertise to advance sustainable energy goals.
