Cuba Completes 130 MW of Solar Capacity

12 Apr 2025  by pv magazine
The Cuban Ministry of Energy finalized the construction of six solar power plants in March 2025, boasting a combined capacity of 130.8 MW. Each facility generates 21.8 MW and is situated in one of five locations: La Sabana in Granma, Remedios in Villa Clara, La Corúa in Holguín, Jovellanos in Matanzas, and Ciego Norte in Ciego de Ávila.

Earlier, in February 2025, two additional solar plants, each with a 21.8 MW capacity, began operating in Cotorro, near Havana, and Abreus in Cienfuegos. These, together with the March installations, form part of Project B, a new initiative aiming to integrate 1 GW of large-scale solar energy into Cuba’s national grid. Meanwhile, Project A, launched several years ago with a similar goal of 1 GW of solar capacity, continues to progress.

These efforts focus on bolstering the country’s electricity network and addressing persistent power shortages. Cuba has set an official goal to achieve 24% renewable energy usage by 2030. According to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), the nation’s total installed solar capacity reached 292 MW by the end of 2024, with 12 MW added during that year.

The new solar plants mark a significant step in expanding renewable energy infrastructure. Project B’s recent additions and Project A’s ongoing development reflect a steady commitment to improving energy reliability across the island. The combined output from these initiatives is expected to contribute substantially to the national grid, supporting local consumption needs.

Cuban authorities emphasize that these solar projects align with broader plans to modernize energy systems while reducing outages. The locations chosen for the plants span multiple provinces, ensuring a distributed approach to power generation. As both projects advance, they aim to play a key role in meeting the 2030 renewable energy target, enhancing stability for households and businesses alike.
