China’s Battery Storage Capacity Doubles in 2024

China’s electrochemical energy storage industry experienced significant growth in 2024, with installed capacity surging past previous records. A report from the China Electricity Council (CEC), released on March 29, titled “2024 Statistical Report on Electrochemical Energy Storage Power Stations,” details this expansion. It notes that the total capacity more than doubled compared to the previous year, driven by larger projects, enhanced efficiency, and improved safety measures.

Throughout the year, 515 new battery storage stations began operations, contributing an additional 37 gigawatts (GW) and 91 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of capacity. This figure exceeds twice the amount added in 2023. Notably, 74% of this new capacity stemmed from utility-scale projects exceeding 100 MW, reflecting a trend toward bigger, centralized energy storage systems. By December 31, 2024, China’s total installed capacity stood at 62 GW and 141 GWh. The majority—95%—of these installations were either standalone storage units or systems paired with renewable energy sources.

The CEC report emphasizes the rapid pace of development in this sector. Projects have grown in scale, with a clear focus on meeting rising energy demands efficiently. Operational improvements have also been a priority, ensuring that these facilities function reliably and safely. This growth aligns with broader efforts to strengthen energy infrastructure across the country.

Industry observers attribute the increase to a combination of technological advancements and strategic planning. The shift toward large-scale systems highlights a preference for centralized solutions capable of supporting substantial energy needs. Meanwhile, the dominance of standalone and renewable-integrated storage underscores their versatility in addressing diverse requirements.

Looking ahead, the momentum from 2024 positions China’s electrochemical energy storage industry for continued progress. The CEC’s findings suggest that this sector will remain a key component of the nation’s energy landscape, adapting to future challenges with innovation and scale.
