Amyntaio solar park
The Kotyli and Neo Syrakio solar plants will together boast a capacity of 567 MW. Once operational, they are expected to produce sufficient electricity annually to supply over 140,000 households. Construction is scheduled to start in spring 2025, with the facilities set to begin operations in 2027. A 10-year power purchase agreement has been established between PPC and RWE Supply & Trading to support the projects.
This collaboration builds on an existing portfolio between RWE and PPC, which currently includes nine solar projects. Five of these are already operational, delivering a combined capacity of 940 MW. These installations are situated in western Macedonia, northern Greece, on the site of the former Amynteo lignite mine.
Konstantinos Mavros, CEO of PPC Renewables, highlighted the broader impact of the initiatives: “Both our current projects in the old lignite mines in Amyntaio and the new investment in Central Macedonia, mean more new jobs both in construction and operation phases, and a promise for sustainable growth and a brighter future for Greece.” The projects are anticipated to create employment opportunities while contributing to the region’s sustainable development.
In 2024, Greece added 2.6 GW of solar capacity, raising its total solar energy capacity to 9.6 GW. The new solar plants in Central Macedonia represent a further step in the country’s efforts to expand renewable energy sources. The partnership between RWE Renewables and PPC Renewables underscores a shared commitment to enhancing clean energy production in the region.
The development of these solar facilities aligns with Greece’s ongoing transition toward renewable energy, utilizing both repurposed industrial sites and new locations to meet growing electricity demands. The projects are poised to play a key role in powering households while supporting economic and environmental goals in northern Greece.
