PGPC to Start Exploration Drilling at MT. Malinao Geothermal Prospect, Philippines

The Philippine Geothermal Production Co. Inc. (PGPC) has launched exploratory drilling at the Mt. Malinao geothermal concession in Albay, Philippines, using its Pioneer 1 drilling rig. The company aims to develop a 49-megawatt (MW) geothermal power project at this site. PGPC, part of SM Investments Corp. (SMIC), is advancing its efforts to expand renewable energy in the region.

PGPC previously outlined plans to develop at least five new geothermal projects across the Philippines, including Mt. Malinao. The goal is to double its current installed capacity from 300 MW to 600 MW within five years. Alongside Mt. Malinao, the company is assessing other prospects on Luzon Island: Kalinga, Daklan, Cagua-Baua, and Mt. Labo. These initiatives align with the Philippine Department of Energy’s target to source at least 50% of the nation’s energy from renewables by 2040.

The Mt. Malinao project marks a significant step in PGPC’s exploration efforts, reinforcing its commitment to sustainable energy growth. As Southeast Asia’s geothermal power pioneer, PGPC builds on a legacy that began with its predecessor, Philippine Geothermal Inc. (PGI). The Mak-Ban geothermal facility, launched in 1979, was the region’s first commercial geothermal operation, setting a foundation for PGPC’s current endeavors.

By deploying the Pioneer 1 rig at Mt. Malinao, PGPC advances its strategy to tap geothermal resources in Albay. The targeted 49 MW development supports the company’s broader plan to enhance capacity and contribute to the Philippines’ renewable energy goals. The focus on Luzon-based sites like Kalinga, Daklan, Cagua-Baua, and Mt. Labo reflects a coordinated effort to expand clean energy infrastructure across the island.

PGPC’s work at Mt. Malinao and beyond strengthens the Philippines’ position in renewable energy. With a history rooted in the 1979 Mak-Ban project, the company continues to lead geothermal development in Southeast Asia. The push to reach 600 MW over the next five years underscores its role in meeting national energy targets while supporting sustainable growth.
