Ennatuurlijk Acquires Geothermal Doublets in Andijk, Netherlands

09 Apr 2025  by thinkgeoenergy
Ennatuurlijk, through its subsidiary Ennatuurlijk Aardwarmte, has finalized the acquisition of two advanced geothermal doublets in Andijk, located in North Holland, Netherlands. Previously operated by Ennatuurlijk, these doublets deliver sustainable heat to local businesses, reducing natural gas use by 28 million cubic meters annually and cutting CO2 emissions by 50,000 tons. The purchase strengthens Ennatuurlijk’s role in providing eco-friendly energy solutions.

The two doublets, operational since February 2019, offer a combined capacity of 36 megawatt-hours (MWH). Ennatuurlijk acquired full ownership by purchasing shares from a group of greenhouse growers, though the consortium retains a stake in the existing heating network. The entity formerly known as ECW Geo Andijk BV has been renamed Ennatuurlijk Aardwarmte Andijk BV to reflect the change.

Arnaud van Dijk, director of VD Holland, remarked: “Thanks to the acquisition by Ennatuurlijk, we can focus on our core activities and no longer have to concern ourselves with the exploitation of the geothermal doublets. We like to use sustainable and affordable heat, but have experienced that geothermal energy requires a lot of specialist knowledge, time and manpower.” This shift allows the growers to prioritize their primary operations while benefiting from reliable heat supply.

With this move, Ennatuurlijk now oversees six geothermal doublets: two in Andijk and four at Agriport in Middenmeer. The company is also exploring the addition of a third doublet in Andijk to expand sustainable heat availability. Beyond this, Ennatuurlijk operates Europe’s only active High Temperature Storage (HTO) system, storing excess geothermal heat in summer for winter use, enhancing energy efficiency.

Alexander van Noort, director of Ennatuurlijk Aardwarmte, stated: “The acquisition of the doublets in North Holland is a long-cherished wish of Ennatuurlijk and demonstrates our continued commitment to sustainable heat. This makes it possible to develop a third heat doublet in Andijk in the future.” The expansion aligns with the company’s goal of increasing renewable heat options in the region.

The Andijk doublets play a vital role in meeting local heat demands sustainably. By replacing natural gas with geothermal energy, they support businesses in North Holland while reducing environmental impact. Ennatuurlijk’s full ownership ensures streamlined management and potential growth in capacity.

This acquisition builds on Ennatuurlijk’s expertise in geothermal energy. The company’s efforts in Andijk and Middenmeer, combined with innovative storage solutions, position it as a key player in the Netherlands’ shift toward cleaner energy. The ongoing partnership with the greenhouse consortium maintains a collaborative approach to the heating network’s operation.

Looking ahead, Ennatuurlijk’s plans for a third doublet signal further investment in sustainable infrastructure. The completed acquisition, announced in April 2025, marks a significant step in enhancing heat supply reliability for North Holland’s commercial sector.
