HydePoint Joins Forces With Nel to Scale up Offshore and Nearshore Hydrogen Projects

10 Apr 2025  by offshore energy
Norwegian company HydePoint, a developer of hydrogen systems, has entered into a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Nel Hydrogen, a provider of electrolyzer technology, to enhance hydrogen production in challenging settings such as offshore and nearshore locations. This partnership aims to advance the scalability of clean hydrogen solutions in demanding environments.

The collaboration will integrate Nel’s PEM electrolyzer stacks into HydePoint’s modular hydrogen production system. Together, the companies plan to create durable setups designed to perform reliably under tough conditions, supporting the expansion of renewable hydrogen for industrial use.

The focus of Nel and HydePoint’s joint efforts includes improving system efficiency, modularity, and resilience, particularly in offshore and nearshore contexts. Their goal is to enhance the levelized cost of hydrogen (LCOH), making large-scale clean hydrogen production more practical and aiding decarbonization efforts across various industries.

Todd Cartwright, Chief Commercial Officer at Nel Hydrogen, stated: “HydePoint brings a highly innovative approach to marine-based hydrogen systems. We see strong alignment between our PEM technology and HydePoint’s ambition to deliver resilient, modular solutions for the global clean energy transition.”

Elin Steinsland, CEO of HydePoint AS, remarked: “We’re proud to collaborate with Nel to accelerate the next generation of offshore and nearshore hydrogen production systems. This is a key milestone in making renewable hydrogen viable at scale and under harsh environment operating conditions.”

In late 2024, HydePoint also established a partnership with Norwegian Hydrogen to speed up the development of mid-size green hydrogen projects located dockside and near shorelines. This additional collaboration complements their work with Nel, broadening their efforts to advance sustainable hydrogen initiatives.

The MoU between HydePoint and Nel represents a significant step toward improving hydrogen production technology for challenging environments. By combining expertise, the two companies aim to create systems that support the growing demand for renewable energy sources, contributing to global sustainability goals.
